“The CrossFit community is a family united by pain, sweat, and the pursuit of greatness.” – Unknown

We all started somewhere

We know that starting something new can be intimidating, so we asked our community to share their first CrossFit experience to show you, we all had to start somewhere. You do not need to be fit to start. You just need to show up.

How did you first learn about CrossFit?

Back in the days I was doing "Insanity" workouts and it took me to the cross training world and ended at CrossFit

What made you want to try it?

After researching and seeing some results in others that had never worked out frequently and started eating healthy, I decided to give it a try.

What was the first workout you remember doing?

I don't remember the first WOD, but I do remembering being impressed seeing somebody doing toes to bar the first time I stepped into a box just to ask about joining it.

What were some of your first thoughts?

It looked bad ass. I didn't know if I would be able to get there but I would at least try.

What keeps you coming back today?

Results:  Before I didn't have the results that i could feel and see in my body, like I do now, even when working out hard (mostly cardio workouts).

Health:  CrossFit is keeping me healthy and being able to inspire others to stay the same way no matter the age or time availability.

Motivation: It keeps me motivated during the "normal" everyday challenges , at home, at work, etc. There is greatness in every person going through each work workout, it doesn't matter the level, and I love to be around that environment

How did you first learn about CrossFit?

I searched "CrossFit" on YouTube back in June of 2017, where I found a clip of some Navy Seals talking about how incredibly tough it was and how there is nothing like it.

What made you want to try it?

Seeing the toughest of the tough say that, made me want to try it, so I found the closest CrossFit gym , found a discounted Groupon for it and paid $1 for my first month. â€‹

What was the first workout you remember doing?

My first workout was "CrossFit Baseline" (500m row, 40 air squats, 30 sit ups, 20 push ups, 10 pull ups). Though I wasn't too sore from that one, I think it was my 2nd or 3rd workout that had like 150 walking lunges in it and after that one, I was sore for a week.

What were some of your first thoughts?

I liked that it was challenging. It scratched that itch in me to push myself physically and be competitive with myself. I remember thinking some of the movements were absolutely insane and that I would "never be that good" (handstand pushups, role climbs, ring muscle ups, GHDs).

What keeps you coming back today?

A lot of the same reasons lol I love that my brain goes silent and all I think about is breathing. I also love the people that I've met in this community. Its tough workouts but we show up together and we all go through the pain together. It doesn't matter what skill level anyone s at, we just love to be in it together and challenge ourselves and each other. Its become an absolute staple in my life and there is infinite space to grown and improve.

How did you first learn about CrossFit?

In 2010 I was part of a "Fit Chicks" Meetup group in Orlando that would do meet ups for different activities such as kayaking, running, yoga, rock climbing, etc. One of the meetups was a free Saturday class at a Crossfit gym.

What made you want to try it?

As a part of the meetup group, we tried lots of activities. I was trying to get in shape so I attended a lot of meetups. I enjoy group class style settings to keep me motivated. CrossFit looked challenging and provided that group class setting.

What was the first workout you remember doing?

The free Saturday class was an AMRAP of Wallballs and Abmat Situps.

What were some of your first thoughts?

This was a lot of fun, everyone looked fit, I won't be bored. Also, this instructor is cute but how do I afford it? (I charged it to a credit card and then reworked my finances.)

What keeps you coming back today?

I honestly would not be able to go a regular gym; it would be so boring. CrossFit is a little bit of everything which always keeps it interesting. I don't have to plan my own workouts; I just have to show up.  It's challenging and I can be as competitive or non-competitive as I want. Lastly the people, the friendships, the accountability.

How did you first learn about CrossFit?

I first tried CrossFit back in 2014 after hearing about it from friends, and I joined a gym to give it a shot. Unfortunately, after six months, I had an accident that left me hesitant to continue. The injury made me lose confidence in returning to CrossFit. However, in 2020, I decided to give it another try, this time at CrossFit 1490. The difference was night and day. The coaches at CrossFit 1490 gave me the support and guidance I needed to feel confident again. They took the time to understand my individual needs, and their personalized approach made all the difference. It wasn’t just about showing up for a workout – it was about ensuring I was moving safely, progressing at my own pace, and being encouraged every step of the way. The level of care and attention I received from the coaches was far beyond what I had experienced before, and that made me feel like I was in the right place this time around.

What made you want to try it?

After the break, I still wanted to challenge myself in new ways, and I knew CrossFit could push me to be better. I was a little nervous, but the thought of being stronger, both physically and mentally, motivated me to try again. What really drew me to CrossFit 1490 was their emphasis on community and support. I knew I needed the right environment this time around to feel confident and safe in my workouts.

What was the first workout you remember doing?

My first workout at CrossFit 1490 was a 10-round partner WOD. While I don’t remember all the exact movements, I know it had a mix of barbell exercises, running, and gymnastics movements. It was a long workout, close to 30 minutes, but the fact that we had partners made a huge difference. The rest periods between rounds allowed me to catch my breath and recharge. The camaraderie and encouragement from my partner, along with the supportive atmosphere of the class, made the workout so much more enjoyable. It really pushed me, but in the best way possible. That experience made me feel like CrossFit could be a lot of fun, and it encouraged me to sign up and keep coming back.

What were some of your first thoughts?

My first thought was, “Wow, these workouts are tough!” But my second thought was, “How can I become stronger and faster like many of the people in this class?” Seeing others push themselves and perform at such a high level made me excited to learn how I could improve too. I wanted to build that kind of strength and endurance, and it gave me the drive to stick with it and see what I could accomplish.

What keeps you coming back today?

The support I get from the coaches and fellow members is what keeps me coming back. At CrossFit 1490, it’s not just about the workouts; it’s about being part of a community that genuinely cares about your progress. The coaches are always there to guide and modify exercises to ensure I’m working within my limits while still being challenged. I have seen real progress throughout my time at Crossfit1490, and the sense of accomplishment I get from every session motivates me to continue pushing myself.

How did you first learn about CrossFit?

I first learned about CrossFit through an instructor in my Fire Academy back in 2012

What made you want to try it?

CrossFit was widely accepted in the military and public service sectors as the best method of achieving overall physical fitness and readiness for any situation. this intrigued me and I wanted to be my best self so I joined a CrossFit box. â€‹

What was the first workout you remember doing?

Being that it was 13 years ago, I don't remember the exact workout but I remember the intensity and giving 110% effort in that short time frame.

What were some of your first thoughts?

I was immediately hooked. You really feel like, and actually do get a full body workout in about 15 mins or less. I was able to push myself to new limits and challenge myself. I also loved learning new thins like Olympic lifting and gymnastics.

What keeps you coming back today?

I'm in the best shape of my life. I've lost over 40lbs and I'm motivated to eat correctly and continue improving. CrossFit has been the anchor for me to get into and stay in shape,
